Fun in the Summertime
Writing this blog just emphasises how lucky we are to be wedding photographers in glorious Devon. I mean, wherever we go, we have a blast and leave grinning, knowing we’ve got it pretty sorted. Heading off to work at the inimitable Tunnels Beaches in North Devon, is pretty special and always a pleasure. When it’s a really hot and sunny Summer’s day, it’s utter bliss!
We arrived at the house in the morning and as per usual, went our separate ways so that both sides of the prep party were captured. The boys’ camp was a sophisticated scene of sharp suits, slick shades and ‘Old Fashioned’ cocktails. The girls’ camp, on the other hand, was a bubbling, giggly little party full of exploding sunscreen, fully head-thrown-back belly laughs, and the cutest little flower girl dog EVER! The weather that we had been blessed with for a wedding day on the beach, was perfect, and the excitement was palpable for the day that was unfolding.
As is usually the case, and incidentally, one of my favourite bits of the day, when the time came for Helen to put on her dress and become the stunning bride she was, the significance of that moment became a reality, and the nerves started to creep in, ever so slightly. Helen held it together while she left the house and throughout the camper van journey to Tunnels, until she saw her Mum, and her Mum saw her beautiful bride of a daughter. And then the emotion hit, both of them. Yeah, OK, and me! It was beautiful!
Sunshine, Lazy Waves, and ‘I Will’s
Helen and Shaun are a pair of bad-ass, outdoor, extreme sports addicts, so saying their vows out in the open air, on a perfect Summer’s day was, well, perfect! The gently lapping waves added an emotive soundtrack to the heartfelt ceremony and while I was beaming behind the camera, any notion of work being a chore, was very far from my mind.
The first kiss as Mr and Mrs signalled the start of the party, so right on cue, the party bringer Paul, the amazing ‘Wedding Spinner DJ’ set to work. The theme was Summer Reggae Beach Vibes, and boy did Paul bring it! It felt more like a Caribbean carnival than a wedding in North Devon, and it was fantastic! A table was set up on the terrace, ready for Prosecco Pong (like beer pong, but, well, you guessed it…), just to make sure that everybody stayed wholly sensible and totally un-lively throughout the speeches. As you can see from the photographs, it might have had the opposite effect. Who knew?
So let’s talk about the speeches. Or rather, let’s not. I think the photographs say all that needs saying. Haha! So. Much. FUN! Raucous, some might say educational, hilarious and emotional, all set in the most astounding venue with the bi-fold doors flung open to let the outside in. Helen and Shaun glowed with happiness, bathed in the warm backlight of the slowly softening sun. Everybody laughed, a lot, cried, a lot. and then tucked into a mind blowingly good BBQ.
Those Summer Nights…
Well fed, well watered and well happy, everybody headed back out to the terrace and down to the beach to soak up some more Summer. Shaun declared the Cigar Bar, which they had put together on the super cool roof terrace, open, and as they were distracted with the slowly dropping sun, Helen snuck off to change into another stunner of an outfit. Helen’s Mum’s face was a picture when she saw her step out with her beach perfect waves now let loose down the back of her gorgeous lace cropped top, and needless to say, Shaun was mightily impressed too. Hand-in-hand, this beautiful couple re-entered their utterly blissful sunset party, ready to take the celebrations through till long after the sun had finally set on their perfect wedding day.
As for us photographers? Well, it was one hell of a fun day on the beach. Our car journey home was just like the latter part of the day; full of loud music, salty toes, raucous laughter and pleased as punch faces.
